About Garnduwa

Garnduwa is currently the only recognised Indigenous sport and recreation organisation across Australia. The corporation acts as a forum for Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley to discuss, plan and co-ordinate youth activities, and to make decisions and recommendations to other organisations about youth, sport and recreation issues. Garnduwa aims to improve the opportunities and participation of Aboriginal people in purposeful recreational and sporting activities, through research, strategy development, and program and service implementation.

Over the past two decades, Garnduwa has developed from a one-man operation based in Broome to employing upwards of 25 staff with offices in each of the major centres within the Kimberley region. The organisation prides itself on the services offered to remote communities under the ‘Think Mental Health’ banner, promoting healthier lifestyles through participation in meaningful sport and recreation activities.

About the Opportunity

Garnduwa is now seeking an enthusiastic full-time Active Communities Coordinator to join their dedicated team in (insert link to location).

Reporting to the Kimberley Active Communities Manager, you will be primarily responsible for coordinating the development of a Community Sport and Recreation Plan within the township of Fitzroy Crossing and surrounding remote communities.

This rewarding role will see you directly influencing the way Garnduwa continues to strive towards its ultimate goal of achieving long-lasting improvements in the opportunities and participation of Aboriginal people in purposeful recreational and sporting activities.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Regular maintenance of Community Sport & Recreation Plans through consultation with community members and stakeholders.
  • Supporting, mentoring and training Community Recreation officers, volunteers and/or community members in order to help build a sustainable and self-sufficient program;
  • Assisting communities and their schools to participate in ongoing competitions and sporting activities;
  • Ensure Garnduwa programs are planned and delivered in required communities, specifically with, afterschool and school holiday activities. 
  • Provide support to other Garnduwa programs and local stakeholder events and activities as requested throughout the Kimberley region
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in support of the Community Sport and Recreation Plan and regional service delivery;
  • Collecting and collating participant data and social outcome achievements;
  • Preparing regular performance reports to relevant funding and associated agencies in regards to program delivery, program outcomes and relevant recommendations;
  • Preparing grant submissions to assist with sport and recreation program delivery; and
  • Maintaining a cultural identification and awareness within all Garnduwa programs.

Please Note: Regular travel to the communities surrounding Fitzroy Crossing is required, both with and without other Garnduwa staff.

About You

Garnduwa is looking for a self-motivated candidate with a history of involvement in sport and recreation programs and an understanding of sport and recreation planning. As a key component of the programs will involve AFL football, an understanding of the sport and experience developing AFL-related programs will be highly regarded. While not essential, relevant qualifications (i.e. sport, education, health, social science, youth development, etc.) will also aid you in this role.

It is crucial that you have an understanding of, and experience working with, Indigenous communities, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

As you'll be engaging a variety of key stakeholders on a daily basis, it's crucial you have well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to code-switch; you'll understand how to best communicate with everyone from sporting and community organisation executives to ESL individuals.

Due to the nature of the role, you'll need to be skilled in data collation and report generation, with competency in the use of computers and electronic media. You'll also require the ability to operate independently in this autonomous position.

Most important of all, you will be passionate about improving outcomes for Australia’s Aboriginal communities.

Established in 1992, Garnduwa Amboorny Wirnan is a not-for-profit organisation established to promote and support the delivery of quality sports and recreation programs in the Kimberley region of WA. Now working with over 30 remote communities, their services have expanded to include leadership, self-esteem, healthy eating and suicide prevention programs, designed in response to problems with school attendance, physical/mental wellbeing, and involvement with the juvenile justice system.
