About the Opportunity

Garnduwa is currently looking for a full-time Active Communities Coordinator to join their team in Kununurra, delivering services to East Kimberley (Wunan) communities.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Manage the planning, implementation and delivery of Garnduwa's Kimberley Active Community Program (KAC) and other programs and activities that are associated with that program within the region.
  • Develop and support the creation of Community Sport and Recreation Plans.
  • Assist in the delivery of Garnduwa regional and cross-regional programs as required, particularly those being staged in Broome, ensuring maximum participation in those programs by people of the East Kimberley Region
  • Assist Remote Communities and their schools to participate in ongoing competitions and sporting activities.
  • Promote and maintain Garnduwa partnerships that are associated with the Kimberley Active Communities program at local and regional levels including, sporting clubs, relevant government departments, RTO's, health agencies, youth groups and local government.
  • Assist, mentor and train any Community Recreation Officers, volunteers or community members that may evolve from that plan in those communities
  • Promote healthy lifestyles that lead to improved social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Accurately maintain the data collection for activities undertaken in the East Kimberley region.

Please note: This role will involve extensive travel to remote Aboriginal communities, including use of dirt roads, small aircraft or 4WD vehicles.

About You

The successful candidate will need demonstrated strong experience in the delivery of sport and recreation programs. It is essential that you can work effectively and collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Experience living/working in remote communities would be beneficial but not essential, provided you are patient, resilient, and highly adaptable, comfortable handling the variety of challenges that can occur in this environment.

You'll bring a creative and innovative approach to both new and existing programs, thinking ‘outside the box’ when developing systems and processes to effectively manage, monitor and deliver outcomes. Your strong communication skills and diplomatic nature will be crucial, as will the ability to lead by example, not afraid to jump into any task at hand and help out wherever needed. You will be able to communicate across a diverse range of stakeholders and participants and you will relish the opportunity to travel across the Kimberley at length, building and maintaining positive relationships.

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements of the role:

  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent relationship and communication skills, both written and oral; with the ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous people and other professional stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of the Kimberley and in particular Kununurra, and its outlying communities.
  • Demonstrated competence in managing staff in a team situation and in particular Indigenous staff.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently without supervision.
  • Sport and Recreation program and planning experience.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Capacity to work outside normal working hours.
  • Capacity to travel within the Kimberley region, both with and without other Garnduwa staff.
  • Proven capability in submission writing and report compilation.
  • Valid C class motor driver's license.
  • Holds a current Senior First Aid Certificate or able to obtain.
  • Holds a current WA Working with Children Check or able to obtain.
  • Sound cultural competence and experience with working within a culturally diverse team
  • Experience in development and delivery of AFL and Basketball programs.

Desirable

  • Athletics development experience
  • A knowledge of the East Kimberley (Wunan) communities and their people
  • LR driver's license
  • Bronze Medallion accreditation

Please note: It is a requirement that all Garnduwa employees undergo a National Police Clearance Check and Working with Children permit prior to commencement. A current 'C' Class Manual Driver's License is also required.

About Garnduwa

Established in 1992, Garnduwa Amboorny Wirnan is a not-for-profit organisation established to promote and support the delivery of quality sports and recreation programs in the Kimberley region of WA. Now working with over 30 remote communities, their services have expanded to include leadership, self-esteem, healthy eating and suicide prevention programs, designed in response to problems with school attendance, physical/mental wellbeing, and involvement with the juvenile justice system.
