About the Opportunity

Garnduwa is currently looking for a Women In Sport Coordinator to join their team in Broome WA, responsible for the coordination and delivery of sport and recreational activities for women across the Kimberley region.

The key objective of this role is to actively work to increase the engagement and capacity of Kimberley women in sport and recreation, particularly AFL.

The ability to travel remotely is an integral requirement of this role, the incumbent is expected to be able to travel regularly to remote Aboriginal communities.  

 

Primary Objectives

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Promote and demonstrate the Garnduwa values of Culture, Community & Leadership with a deep respect for Aboriginal people, culture, land, sea and tradition in all components of the role
  • Coordination of the female Kimberley Spirit Program
  • Coordinate and deliver the Making Her Mark Program annually
  • Assist in the design and coordination of the annual Women In Sport Forum
  • Develop and support programs to increase female participation in sport and recreation across the Kimberley
  • Ensure that deliverables are met in line with Garnduwa Policy and the program schedule, accurately maintaining the data for all activities undertaken
  • Assist in the delivery of Garnduwa regional and cross-regional programs as required, ensuring maximum participation in those programs by women
  • Oversee the continuous development, expansion and improvement of Garnduwa’s Leadership Programs across the Kimberley
  • Liaise with appropriate local and regional agencies to ensure that appropriate health, life skill and education promotions are developed and incorporated within all Garnduwa programs
  • Promote and maintain Garnduwa partnerships that are associated with the Kimberley Active Communities project at local and regional levels including, sporting clubs, relevant government departments, RTO’s, health agencies, youth groups and local government
  • Compilation and preparation of information as required for Garnduwa promotional activities including newsletters, media articles and reports
  • In consultation with the Culture, Art & Sport Manager & Corporate Services Manager, monitor and operate within the constraints of the program budgets appropriate to all regional programs
  • Prepare grant submissions to assist in the continued development of Garnduwa’s Active Leadership Programs for women of the Kimberley
  • Maintain a cultural identification and awareness within all Garnduwa programs

 

About You

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Knowledge of the barriers facing women in the Kimberley with regard to participation in sport and recreation
  • Excellent relationship and communication skills, both written and verbal; with the ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous people and other professional stakeholders
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently without supervision
  • Sport and recreation program and planning experience, particularly AFL and basketball
  • Strong computer skills
  • Capacity to work outside of normal working hours
  • Capacity to travel within the Kimberley region, both with and without other Garnduwa employees
  • Currently hold or willing to obtain an active Driver’s Licence (C Class would be advantageous), National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check
  • Sound cultural competence and experience working within a culturally diverse team

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong knowledge of the Kimberley
  • Capability in submission writing and report compilation
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Current Bronze Medallion
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant sport, social science, health, community services or education field

Please note: This role may involve some travel to remote Aboriginal communities, including use of dirt roads, small aircraft or 4WD vehicles.

About Garnduwa

Established in 1992, Garnduwa Amboorny Wirnan is a not-for-profit organisation established to promote and support the delivery of quality sports and recreation programs in the Kimberley region of WA. Now working with over 30 remote communities, their services have expanded to include leadership, self-esteem, healthy eating and suicide prevention programs, designed in response to problems with school attendance, physical/mental wellbeing, and involvement with the juvenile justice system.
